Student projects
Master students can get a work place if required (typically HG G 14.1 or at HG J 11). Bachelor and semester project students don't get a work place as a rule.
The students can get the following documents at the beginning of the project (pass by the IT responsible)
All files on the computer introduction for Master, Bachelor and Semester students can be found in the directory
/u/sfs/masterarbeiten/dokumente (pay attention to the
README file).
A list of students that are writing a thesis at the SfS at the moment can be found under
/u/sfs/masterarbeiten/hs11.ods. This file is being maintained by Markus.
Computer introductions:
At the beginning of the semester typically 1-2 computer introduction take place (organised by Ruben at the moment). All master student should participate. The introduction is based on the file
Welcome at SfS and should take less than an hour. Important topics are:
- most important commands to find your way in the terminal
- a short emacs presentation (in the case of there being interest in this) (R-Code & ESS, LaTeX compilation,...)
- showing were one can find the thesis templates
- showing how one can log in to the computing servers and how to start an R_BATCH job
- How to use the SfS library
- pointing to this wiki
Nota bene: there is no expansive LaTeX introduction anymore. Most of the students have already worked with it during their studies and the examples in the template should suffice. In the case someone hasn't worked with
LaTeX before, they can contact the IT responsible (currently Ruben) to get a short introduction or get some specific
LaTeX tutorial resources
Master students that cannot participate in the official computer introductions should read
Welcome at SfS themselves.
Library introduction:
At the beginning of the semester an introduction to the
ETH library is offered by Frau Lanini who shows the
knowledge portal and multiple mathematics/statistics specific databases which one can access.
Student projects
Masterstudenten bekommen wenn nötig und möglich einen Arbeitsplatz bei uns (typischerweise im HG G 14.1 oder im HG J 11). Bachelor- und Semesterstudenten erhalten in der Regel keinen Arbeitsplatz.
Die Studenten sollten am Anfang ihrer Arbeit folgende Dokumente erhalten (bei Ruben vorbeikommen):

Eine Liste der Studenten die zurzeit bei uns eine Arbeit schreiben, findet man unter
/u/sfs/masterarbeiten/hs11.ods. Die Datei wird von Markus verwaltet.
Compi-Einführungen:
Anfangs Semester finden jeweils 1-2 Einführungen statt (werden von Ruben organisiert). Alle Masterstudenten sollten daran teilnehmen. Bachelor- und Semesterstudenten werden auch eingeladen. Die Einführung basiert auf dem Dokument
Welcome at SfS und dauert eine knappe Stunde. Insbesondere wird folgendes besprochen:
- wichtigste Befehle um sich in einem Terminal zurecht zu finden
- kurze emacs Presentation mit kleinen Beispielen (R-Code & ESS, LaTeX direkt kompilieren,...)
- zeigen wo man die Vorlage für den Bericht findet, Beispiele (vor allem R code listing und texab.sty) kurz anschauen
- zeigen wie man sich auf einem compute server einloggt und einen R_BATCH job aufgibt
- Benutzung der Seminarbibliothek
- Verweis auf dieses Wiki um viele SfS (Computer) bedingte Fragen zu beantworten
Nota bene: es gibt keine umfangreiche LaTeX Einführung mehr. Die meisten Studenten haben während dem Studium schon damit gearbeitet, und die Beispiele in unserer Vorlage genügen ihnen. Falls jemand noch nie mit LaTeX gearbeitet hat und eine kurze Einführung möchte, soll er/sie mit Ruben einen Termin abmachen.
Masterstudenten die nicht an einer der offiziellen Einführungen teilnehmen können, sollen
Welcome at SfS selbst durchlesen, und sich bei Fragen an Ruben wenden.
Bibliothek Einführung:
Anfangs Semester wird auch eine Einführung bei der
ETH Bibliothek angeboten. In dem Rahmen präsentiert Frau Lanini das
Wissensportal und mehrere Mathematik/Statistik-spezifische Datenbanken auf die man über das Wissensportal zugreifen kann. Die Bibliothek Einführungen werden von Ruben koordiniert.
