X11

This is the commonly used name of the X-Windows system. It was developed at MIT as the project "Athena" and is since ca. 1992 being developed by the X-Consortium. It is "Free Software", which means one can get the source code from the project and install it yourself.

On this base system, many window managers (WMs) and toolboxes have been developed.

The properties of the user environment is specified in the files .Xdefaults, .xinitrc, .twmrc, /u/sfs/X11/xinitrc.all and /u/sfs/X11/Xdefaults. There is already a practical basis of configuration provided. If you would like to add your own special additions, you can do this in the files .xinitrc and .Xdefaults.

Das X-Windows system, welches in der Version 11 das Unix Windows System geworden ist, wurde am MIT als Projekt "Athena" seit ca. 1992 vom X-Consortium entwickelt und ist "Free Software", das heisst man kann den Source code bekommen und installieren (alles in C).

Auf diesem "Grund system" werden nun diverse "Window Manager" (WM) und "Toolboxes" entwickelt.

Die Benützerumgebung wird durch die Dateien .Xdefaults, .xinitrc, .twmrc, /u/sfs/X11/xinitrc.all und /u/sfs/X11/Xdefaults festgelegt. Es ist schon ein praktischer Grundstock an Konfiguration enthalten. Will man aber noch eigene Spezialitäten beifügen kann man dies im .xinitrc und .Xdefaults spezifizieren.
